Fall planting is in full swing. As you nestle tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses into the soil, don't neglect to also plant some minor bulbs — "minor" only because they aren't well known, not because they lack quality.
Amaryllis, especially popular in red, is a winter bulb blooming favorite and available on teleflora.com ($57.95) to provide long lasting indoor color.
The first official day of winter is still a month away. But the season is now in full swing for shorter days and less sunshine to herald the arrival of months of cold and colorless outside landscapes.
The Citizens Utility Board, or CUB, will be at River Oaks Center in Calumet City at noon June 27 to hand out 3,000 energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light, or CFL, bulbs.
