Children In Poverty
The number of children in Northwest Indiana from low-income families and eligible for free or reduced-price lunch has climbed in the region and across the state, as school districts face tighter budgets and reduced state funding. That problem is compounded for students in urban districts.
Educators know there is a correlation between students growing up in poverty and lower levels of achievement. Trying to disconnect that link is the key challenge they face, they said.
Fifty years after President Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty, the U.S. finds itself still grappling with homelessness, mental illness, joblessness, urban blight and other persistent issues connected with being impoverished, unemployed, uneducated or otherwise unable to find opportunity.
Region schools face an ongoing challenge providing an education and other social services to homeless students.
