I long ago fell in love with the clean, crisp, sweet taste of Meyer lemons. And recently, Mexican foods guru Rick Bayless reminded me why.
Though the idea of growing oranges, kumquats, figs, lemons and limes seems crazy in a cold Midwest winter, it's possible to fight the cold weather blues by creating a fragrant tropical oasis indoors.
Louis XIV had the right idea. Even when fresh fruit was out of season, the French king didn't have to forgo oranges, because his gardeners kept him well supplied from the 3,000 citrus trees collected from around the world growing in the orangery at Versailles.
