It's not exactly a holy war, but churches have been forced to develop a new battle plan to recapture people's interest from the myriad other obligations, attractions and distractions vying for their time and attention.
Nearly 100 people were being baptized in the region during late evening services on Holy Saturday, said Debbie Bosak, communications director for the Catholic Diocese of Gary.
Calling it an attack on religious freedom, the region's leading Catholic authority has taken aim at a federal law that would force most private health insurance plans to cover birth control, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs.
