Gary's Genesis Convention Center is poorly suited for large conventions. There's no hotel nearby, and the husk of the former Sheraton Hotel stands as a reminder of the past failure to have a hotel and the Genesis Center be symbiotic.
The Genesis Convention Center has had little athletic opportunities for fans since the Gary Steelheads folded. Jewell Harris, former CEO for the Steelheads, and Chuck Hughes, executive director for the Gary Chamber of Commerce, discuss the building's options.
The civic center opened three decades ago around the time the much larger Allstate Arena did in Rosemont, but never packed in the same crowds. Taxpayer subsidies kept the lights on, and the facility broke even last year after expenses were slashed by 30 percent.
Here we go again. More dreamers without a clue.
I love Northwest Indiana. Lived and worked here all my life. So much to do. So much news to cover. Never a dull moment.
