Americans shouldn't be punished for voicing views

Did we lose our freedom of speech? If not, then why is it that when someone is asked his opinion on a matter, such as homosexuality, if he gives an honest answer he/she is suspended from their job? If they give an answer that fits with the crowd, then there is no repercussions.
