Lake Calumet Airport Plan
CHICAGO | The Hegewisch library branch stands about where the terminal would have been if the Lake Calumet Airport plan hadn't been defeated.
Pictured is the front page of The Times from Feb. 17, 1990 about the Lake Calumet Airport plan Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley had proposed only days before. The third Chicago airport would have affected residents in Burnham, Calumet City and parts of the Southeast Side.
The Lake Calumet Airport is still "dead, dead, dead," but it enjoyed a brief, meteoric rise and fall during the long, continuing battle over construction of a third Chicago area airport.
CHICAGO | The Hegewisch public library, 3048 E. 130th St., is inviting guests to remember the failed Lake Calumet airport plan with a special program from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.
There’s something for everyone happening in Hegewisch the next few weeks. Whether you love a good meal or learning about local history, we’ve got you covered.
