CROWN POINT | The Lake County Parks and Recreation Department is in the process of updating its Five-Year Parks and Recreation Open Space Plan for 2014 to 2019. The plan, a guideline for future development and management, will be submitted to the Indiana Department of Recreation in April.
No matter how cold it gets outdoors, the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department knows how to warm things up with fun and educational activities in the parks.
Winter activities, like cross country ski rentals at Lemon Lake, Oak Ridge Prairie, and Stoney Run county parks, and sledding hills at Lemon Lake and Oak Ridge Prairie, are now open when adequate snow is available.
LAKE STATION | The Lake County Parks and Recreation Department has a festive December planned at Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center.
MERRILLVILLE | The Snowflake Skate is an annual winter party for girls 6 and older and their dolls or stuffed animals, hosted by the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at Deep River Waterpark Ice Skating Plaza, 9001 E. U.S. 30.
GRIFFITH | The Lake County Parks and Recreation Department will host an afternoon of CSRI Wheelchair Accessible Hayrides for families with special needs from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge Prairie County Park, 301 S. Colfax St.
HAMMOND | An Edible Plants program will be presented at 1 p.m. Sunday, at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, 6201 Parrish Ave.
Hay rides are offered at Lake County's Buckley and Deep River parks this fall. No reservations are needed. These hay rides are not for groups.
LAKE STATION | Two active programs at Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center offer parents and tots exercise and education. Join the class, then stay and play at the center at Three Rivers County Park, 2800 Colorado St.

Reservations for tractor drawn hayrides are offered by the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department at Lemon Lake, Stoney Run, Oak Ridge Prairie, Deep River, and Buckley Homestead county parks in September and October.

LOWELL | Volunteers are needed to monitor streams and rivers in Indiana for water quality, and a Hoosier River Watch Workshop set for Friday at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road, will provide participants with the resources and skills needed to become part of this project.
MERRILLVILLE | Weather permitting, Deep River Waterpark will open for the season Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be open daily through Memorial Day.
The Lake County Parks and Recreation Department is ready for spring, even if the weather is not cooperating.
