Robert Bragiel poses with the wooden statue of the Blessed Mother he carved in his workshop. It's not Bragiel's first brush with carving figures. He also has several carousel horses in his home that he carved, including a life-size wood carving of the legendary race horse Secretariat.

Main Gary Public Library closes its doors

A sign Wednesday in the lobby of the main Gary Public Library lets patrons know that items no longer can be checked out. The building will stay open for returns until Monday. After that, it will be closed during a $2 million project to convert it to a museum and cultural center.

Chelsey Allen, a new English teacher this year at Hammond High School, works with her class. The School City of Hammond has hired 75 new teachers and four new administrators. Of the new teachers, 21 of them have been placed at Hammond High School.
