INDIANAPOLIS | Gov. Mike Pence has requested federal grants to cover a portion of the local snow removal and public safety expenses incurred by 49 Indiana counties — including Lake, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper — during the Jan. 5-9 severe winter storm.
It seems the controversy dogging Portage Mayor James Snyder’s decision to send snowplows into Gary a few weeks back just won’t go away.
As a long time Hammond resident, I feel Hammond — in particular, Gary Gleason and his crew — deserve praise and thanks for the tireless job they've done to keep the streets as clear of snow, free of ice and as safe as possible in this "snowmageddon" we've endured since Christmas.

Drivers for the Lake County Highway Department work to prepare trucks for snowplowing and other uses. The trucks can qucikly and easily be converted from salt trucks to dump trucks used for hauling asphalt, gravel, dirt or sand.
First-time snowplow driver Xavier Dates, of East Chicago, will be among the legion of drivers working District 2 for the Lake County Highway Department. Dates has driven a truck for years but has not been a plow driver until this season.

A homeowner attacking his snow-enveloped driveway saw an approaching Lake County Highway Department plow Wednesday morning, dropped his snow shovel and held up an offer written on paper plates: "$40 -- driveway."
