The Great Lakes shipping season has kicked off after the iciest winter in 35 years.
A U.S. Coast Guard cutter made its way south on Lake Michigan this week to break up ice in Burns Harbor, to ensure lake freighters and barges can continue to come into the port.
Ships, including iron ore freighters bound for Northwest Indiana steel mills, have been jamming up the ice-choked St. Marys River in recent weeks as they rush to make deliveries before the Soo Locks close this week.
