INDIANAPOLIS | Gov. Mike Pence personally appeared before a Senate committee Wednesday and asked the panel to advance a House-approved prekindergarten voucher program for up to 1,000 low-income Hoosier children.
Public schools are the foundation of democracy. In 2012-13 some $37 million in Indiana tax dollars went to charter and parochial schools. This is a drain on public education.

The Indiana Department of Education released final figures Thursday regarding Indiana's new school voucher program, reporting that nearly 4,000 students from low- and moderate-income families have taken advantage of the program.
Nearly 3,800 students across Indiana have taken advantage of the school vouchers as of September, state officials said.
Sylvia Thomas, of Gary, said her daughter NyCole became stressed out and physically ill last year as a freshman at Gary's Roosevelt Career and Technical Academy. NyCole's supposedly advanced classes had many students not at the same level, Thomas said.
Before lawmakers put the finishing touches on any private-school voucher bill, they should consider the law of unintended consequences.
