As the nation celebrates National School Choice Week today through Friday local and state school choice supporters said they'd like to see changes in the law to give parents even more options.
GARY | Gov. Mitch Daniels reiterated the state's voucher law is constitutional and in the best interests of students as he toured Ambassador Academy and talked to students, teachers and parents.
The Indiana Department of Education released final figures Thursday regarding Indiana's new school voucher program, reporting that nearly 4,000 students from low- and moderate-income families have taken advantage of the program.
Nearly 3,800 students across Indiana have taken advantage of the school vouchers as of September, state officials said.
Sylvia Thomas, of Gary, said her daughter NyCole became stressed out and physically ill last year as a freshman at Gary's Roosevelt Career and Technical Academy. NyCole's supposedly advanced classes had many students not at the same level, Thomas said.
Before lawmakers put the finishing touches on any private-school voucher bill, they should consider the law of unintended consequences.
