Younger generations may think that Pierogi Fest put Whiting on the map, but if you were alive in 1955, you know it is just another event that earned Whiting headlines across the nation.
As a child, the only way my mom and I could go to Chicago was by taking the South Shore Railroad. She wouldn't drive there and besides, there was something very romantic about actually getting on a train to go anyplace when you're a kid.
At our very last summer symphony concert in Whiting, a friend of mine came up to me and simply said "Six." I had no idea what she was talking about, and she repeated the number to me again.
This picture of "Whiting's Our Gang" remains a mystery to the Whiting Robertsdale Historical Society. Information about the picture and the children in it is being sought.
