VALPARAISO | Attorney David Hollenbeck began Thursday night’s Valparaiso School Board meeting by swearing in Karl Cender as a member after he was reappointed by the Valparaiso City Council at the end of June.

While many factors contribute to the price we pay at the pump — discovery costs, taxes, refining and distribution, world politics, etc. — it's still largely an issue of supply and demand. There's limited oil supply. Global demand is growing. So the price climbs.

It is easy to focus on problems. Without question, unemployment remains unacceptably high in Northwest Indiana and across our nation. More needs to be done to educate residents and our region needs to promote itself as a great location to raise a family.
From every possible direction, we see and hear about education. Whether preschool, kindergarten through high school, vocational or college, Hoosiers focus on education. And that is important.

Last week the president of the Northwest Indiana Forum resigned, and I was selected as the interim President and CEO. While I had served as the volunteer board chair several years ago, I should provide you with an update on the Forum, where we are and what we will do.
Positive business developments are taking place throughout Indiana. That's welcome news that is long overdue. A strong state economy is important to our efforts here in Northwest Indiana.
