Day 1 of MLB draft passes with no locals picked; several optimistic for today
Neither Illiana Christian's Braden Kapteyn nor St. Rita's Tony Zych were chosen in Thursday's Major League draft.
Kapteyn, who will graduate tonight, and Zych, a Monee resident, are expected to be picked today. Kapteyn has signed to play at Kentucky, while Zych is a Louisville recruit. Both had said they would pursue college if they were not taken in the early rounds.
They'd have needed a considerable amount of money in a signing bonus to forgo their college careers and educations. Second-day picks typically don't receive blockbuster bonuses.
"I think it is getting evident that I will go to school," Kapteyn said. "I told them that unless I went in the first couple of rounds, I would go to school."
Kapteyn said he is focused on getting ready for school. If drafted, teams have until August 15 to sign their picks. If neither signs, they will not be eligible to be drafted again until after their junior seasons or until they turn 21.
"I am just getting ready for school and to do what I have to do to help Kentucky," Kapteyn said. "It is a real good school and a good program.
"I said before I have three years to get better and I will do the best of my ability to help Kentucky."
Other players who will have their cell phones ready for most of today include former Merrillville standout Darryl Evans, now an outfielder for Florida A&M; Bishop Noll grad Andy Loomis, now a relief pitcher for Purdue; and Valparaiso University's Zach Rodeghero.
