GARY | Kyle Kobernus was close to pitching himself out of a two-out, one-on jam when he loaded the bases twice and walked home the winning run in an extra-inning affair.
Fargo-Moorhead leadoff hitter Boomer Berry scored first on a wild pitch, then Jimmy Hurst drove in the all-important insurance run with a walk in a 5-4 game that lasted 3 hours and 49 minutes.
The RailCats countered in the bottom of the 11th when Cristian Guerrero reached on an error and scored on a Mike Rohde single.
But, with the bases loaded and one out, Fargo-Moorhead converted a double play to end the game and extend the RedHawks' winning streak to 10 games, winning 15 of their last 16. The win also extended Fargo's lead in the Northern League standings.
The RailCats have played in five extra-inning games this season, losing four.
Kobernus took the loss -- his second of the season -- as the RailCats used six pitchers to Fargo's three.
Starter Jeremy Plexico went six innings and was in line for the win before Fargo-Moorhead tied the game 3-3 when David Castillo hit the first pitch from reliever Nate Hoelscher over the fence for a home run.
The RailCats didn't have a hit between the third inning, when they scored the third of their three runs, and the 11th.
The ‘Cats play two more against the league-leading RedHawks, then three against Winnipeg, currently ahead of the Gary team in the Northern League standings. The Goldeyes topped Kansas City 6-1 on Tuesday.
"You want to take advantage of any game that you have," RailCats manager Greg Tagert said. "You don't get excited about playing Fargo and Winnipeg for the team, but for the competition. It's a good challenge for us. But it's not a couple clubs you're going to feast on."
The RailCats now have eight straight losses to Fargo-Moorhead, including four last week at Newman Outdoor Field.
"You look at every series and you say, 'Is this a critical series?'" Tagert said. "If we can stay in this thing and get some people healthy and it's not just us, there are no excuses.
