GRIESE READY FOR EX-TEAM: Brian Griese spent last week at the media version of a driving range. Be it face-to-face with the hometown press or over the phone with out-of-towners, the ball was teed up for the Tampa Bay quarterback to pull out his driver and take a whack at his former team.

Griese, though, chose to work on his short game.

"I'm just really excited about the opportunity to come back and play against a bunch of guys that I have a lot of respect for," said Griese, who will lead the Buccaneers (1-1) against the Bears (1-1) at noon today at Soldier Field. "I'm looking forward to the challenge."

COLTS WON'T CHANGE PLANS: The Colts don't expect a change in their defensive game plan against the Jacksonville Jaguars today, even with second-year safety Melvin Bullitt subbing for injured Bob Sanders, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season.

Sanders could be out up to six weeks with a right ankle sprain he suffered last week against Minnesota. But Bullitt, an undrafted free agent last year, played well in Sanders' place in the fourth quarter of the Colts' 18-15 come-from-behind win against the Vikings last Sunday.

"Obviously when you lose a great player, other guys have to step up their performance," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "You can't expect the player who comes in to be able to do all the same things, but we're not going to really change what we do."

Pro golf

AMERICANS LEAD RYDER CUP: Birdie putts kept falling, one on top of the other, until the Americans finally secured a Saturday lead in the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1995 and players from both teams had nothing left to give.

Robert Karlsson concluded a gripping afternoon at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky., with his seventh birdie in 10 holes as he and fellow Swede Henrik Stenson scratched out a halve against Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan.

The Americans held on for two key halves to split the afternoon fourballs session, taking a 9-7 lead into the final round of 12 singles, finally giving them a fighting chance to wrest the 17-inch gold chalice away from Europe.

Auto racing

BUSCH EARNS NATIONWIDE WIN: Kyle Busch made it eight victories this season in the Nationwide Series, leading 157 laps and absolutely dominating to win Saturday in a green-white-checkered flag finish at Dover International Speedway.

Busch won in the same No. 18 Toyota that his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin drove to Victory Lane in May. Starting from the pole, Busch was never really challenged and pulled ahead by a couple of car lengths on the final restart late in an overtime race that stretched to 207 laps.

Mike Bliss was second and Brad Keselowski was third.

College tennis

CRUSADERS DUO WINS AT INVITE: In doubles flight No. 2 at the Country Inn and Suites Invitational hosted by Bradley in Peoria, Valparaiso University's Phidias Fortune and Kyle Stump posted their first victory of the weekend, an 8-4 triumph over Eric Plaushines and Brian McCarthy of Green Bay. Stump also won a singles match over Green Bay's Matt Clegg 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.
