BENGALS SIGN T.O.: The Cincinnati Bengals agreed to a contract with receiver Terrell Owens, who is expected to report to training camp in a couple of days.

Owens wanted to play for the Bengals, who offered a deal on Monday looking to add another deep threat to their offense. He accepted the offer on Tuesday, said the person who confirmed the deal, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had made no announcement.

The Bengals report for training camp Wednesday in Georgetown, Ky. Owens is expected to arrive for the first day of workouts Thursday.

Receiver Chad Ochocinco is one of Owens' close friends, and welcomed him on his Twitter feed. Ochocinco lobbied for the team to sign Owens and has dubbed the two of them Batman and Robin.

LEGENDARY RAIDER DIES: Jack Tatum, the Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders best known for his crushing hit that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in an NFL preseason game in 1978, has died. He was 61.

COLTS SIGN ANOTHER DRAFTEE: The Colts signed fifth-round draft pick Brody Eldridge, a tight end out of Oklahoma.

Pro basketball

FEVER ABLE TO EDGE SKY: Tamika Catchings had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Fever to a 78-74 win over the visiting Sky for their fifth straight win.

Briann January added 15 points and Katie Douglas scored 13 for the Fever (16-7). Catchings' double-double was the 65th of her career, tying her for seventh all-time in WNBA history.

Indiana beat Chicago for the fifth time, marking the first time a team has beaten an opponent five times in the same regular season.

Sylvia Fowles had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Shay Murphy scored 12 for the Sky (12-13), who had won four of five entering the game.

The Fever remain one game ahead of Atlanta (16-9) for first place in the Eastern Conference.

College sports

VU PLACES 68 ATHLETES ON LEAGUE HONOR ROLL: Valparaiso University placed 68 student-athletes on the Horizon League's spring academic honor roll. The list included Chesterton's Kelly Peller (women's basketball), Illiana Christian's Jordan Piaskowy (men's cross country/track) and Portage's Whitney Bowman (women's cross country/track).

GCABA HALL OF FAME MEETING MONDAY: The annual meeting of the Greater Calumet Area USBC Bowling Association takes place at 7 p.m. Monday at Dynasty Banquets in Hammond. Two men will be elected two men into the organization's 24th Hall of Fame class. Names on the ballot include Valparaiso's Tim Bales, Whiting's John Blasko, Dyer's Dave Bohlin, Hammond's Jim Kamizeles and South Holland's Bill Slateritz. The top-two vote getters will be inducted at the 24th Annual Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet in December. All sanctioned GCABA members are eligible to vote, but are required to show their sanction card to gain admittance. The group will also vote on a proposed dues increase from $7 to $10 for local dues. National dues are $10. League officers will also be able to pick up league supplies for the 2010-11 season beginning at 6:30 p.m.

HELPING HANDS FUNDRAISER SUNDAY: The Joe and Joyce annual bowling tournament takes place at 5 p.m. Sunday at Stardust II in Merrillville. The event is a Helping Hands fundraiser.

WASHINGTON TWP. SETS SCHEDULES: Girls and boys volleyball practice at Washington Twp. begins Monday. Girls teams meet from 3-6 p.m., while boys teams follow from 6-8. All athletes must have a completed physical form on file before they will be allowed to practice.

BOONE GROVE PHYSICALS MOVED TO THURSDAY: Athletic physicals for Boone Grove athletes will now take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the high school.

VALPARAISO ANNOUNCES FALL START DATES: Valparaiso High School has announced its fall sports starting dates and times.

Girls golf tryouts take place at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Valparaiso County Club and at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Park.

Football practice runs from 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, and players should meet at the VHS Cleat house. Practices run 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Aug. 6, and players should meet in Lecture Room A/TL 106.

Boys soccer tryouts run from 6-9 p.m. Monday through Aug. 5 at the Viking Soccer Arena.

Girls soccer tryouts run from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at Viking Soccer Arena.

Boys tennis tryouts run from 9 to 11 a.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Aug. 6. at the VHS tennis courts.

Volleyball tryouts run from 6 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 8:30 p.m. p.m. Monday through Wednesday in the main gym.

Girls cross country camp runs from Monday through Aug. 6, while initial practices run from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Aug. 9-13.

Boys cross country camp runs from Monday through Friday, while initial practices run from 8-10 a.m. Aug. 9-14.

All athletes must have a completed physical and emergency medical treatment waiver forms on file before they will be allowed to practice.

MORGAN TWP. ANNOUNCES FALL START DATES: Morgan Twp. announced its start dates for fall sports. Five high school sports begin their practices on Monday. Girls volleyball meets from 8 to 10:30 a.m.; girls cross country runs from 8 to 10 a.m.; boys volleyball runs from 10:30 to 1 p.m.; boys cross country runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and varsity soccer runs from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

All athletes must have a completed physical form on file before they will be allowed to practice.

MUNSTER SETS START DATES: Munster High School has announced its fall sports starting dates and times.

Girls golfers should contact the athletic department before Friday.

MERRILLVILLE SLATES PRACTICE DATES: A varsity, junior varsity and freshman football parents meeting will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Merrillville High School arena, Entrance A.

Varsity and JV football practice will go from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the stadium.

Equipment handout for freshman football will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Practice will go from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Boys soccer practice will run from 4-7:30 p.m. Monday at the practice fields.

Girls soccer practice will go from 3-6 p.m. Monday at soccer practice fields.

SOUTH HAMMOND BABE RUTH HOLDS FALL SIGNUPS: South Hammond Babe Ruth is holding signups for its 12-14 baseball team from 7-8 tonight at the Riverside Park concession stand. LANSING SWIMMERS COMPETE AT INDIANA AGE-GROUP MEET: Six athletes from the Lansing Swim Organization participated in the Indiana Age Group State Meet, which was held July 23-25 in Indianapolis. Bailey Young placed third in both the 50- and 100-meter backstroke. Susanna Reese placed fifth in the 50 breast, while Jamiere Wilson was fifth in the 50 breast and seventh in the 50 free.
