Spike Albrecht spent Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 2011 Crown Point graduate was making his official visit to the Wolverines' men's basketball program.
The 6-foot-1 point guard is expected to receive a scholarship offer from head coach John Beilein on Friday.
"I know the Michigan coaches love him," said John Carroll, the head coach at Northfield Mount Hermon in Massachusetts, the prep school where Albrecht competed this past winter.
Beilein visited Crown Point last week to meet with Chuck and Tammy, Spike's parents, and C.P. head coach Clint Swan. The family was scheduled to have dinner at Beilein's home on Thursday night.
"Spike always played at a high level for us," Swan said, "but to see what he did at the highest level of prep school ball this past year, that was remarkable.
"I know the Michigan staff is very excited about Spike and I know I am really happy for him. He's worked really hard for this opportunity."
Swan and Chuck Albrecht said that Chesterton native Zack Novak, a Michigan senior, spoke highly of Albrecht to his coach. So, too, did Lake Central's Glenn Robinson III and Indians' coach Dave Milausnic.
Albrecht was named the Most Valuable Player in the NEPSAC Boys Basketball Tournament. Northfield Mount Hermon won the tournament and gave top-ranked Brewster Academy its only loss of the season.
Brewster's Mitch McGary, a Chesterton native, and L.C.'s Robinson have already signed at Michigan. Albrecht will make it three region players on next year's Wolverines' squad.
SYF coach Wayne Brumm helped Albrecht raise his game. Brumm is friends with Michigan assistant coach Jeff Meyer. Michigan freshman point guard Trey Burke is leaning on leaving for the NBA.
Chuck Albrecht said that, either way, his son's courting by the Wolverines will continue even if Burke chooses to stay in college. Michigan had three scholarships to fill before next season.
"I knew they needed a point guard and I let them know I had a kid," Brumm said. "Spike played well all season but he really finished strong. I know Beilein likes Spike and so does Meyer. I think it's going to happen. You never say for sure until it does but I expect for everything to be finalized (today)."
Beilein visited Mount Hermon and Carroll said in a pickup game against 18 Division I players Albrecht had about 25 assists to one turnover.
"In the middle of December, Spike's game just took off," Carroll said. "He played against the top point guards in America with our schedule and he was never dominated. Not once.
"I know if Spike goes to Michigan he will have a great career after what he's shown us here in one year."
