Rotnei Clarke and Kameron Woods scored 17 points apiece, and Andrew Smith posted a double-double to lead Butler past Massachusetts 73-62 Thursday night, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Kyle Marshall added 14 points of 6-of-7 shooting before fouling out. Smith finished with 13 points and 15 boards for Butler (23-7, 10-5 Atlantic 10 Conference), which outrebounded its fifth straight opponent.

Terrell Vinson led UMass (18-10, 8-7) with 17 points.

Penn St. 66, Northwestern 59: Jermaine Marshall and D.J. Newbill each scored 18 points to lead Penn State to a victory over Northwestern.

Penn State (10-19, 2-15 Big Ten), last in the 12-team conference, scored the game's first 12 points, withstood a Northwestern surge, then pulled away in the second half. The Nittany Lions' only other conference win was at home against No. 7 Michigan on Feb. 27.

The Wildcats (13-17, 4-13) have lost seven in a row. Northwestern's Alex Marcotullio scored a career-high 22 point.

Drake 81, Bradley 66: Chris Hines scored 16 points, and Drake defeated Bradley (16-16) in the opener of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

The ninth-seeded Bulldogs (15-16) earned a quarterfinal game against regular-season champion Creighton today.  

 

Women

No. 17 South Carolina 77, Alabama 35: Elem Ibiam scored 19 points; Ashley Bruner pulled down 14 rebounds, and South Carolina (24-6) easily defeated Alabama (13-18) in the second round of the Southeastern Conference tournament on Thursday.

Iowa 60, Northwestern 55: Morgan Johnson and Jamie Printy scored 18 points apiece and Iowa defeated Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten women's tournament.

Bethany Doolittle added 10 points and Samantha Logic grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (20-11), the seventh seed in the tournament. They advance to meet No. 21 Nebraska, the Big Ten's second seed, in today's quarterfinals.

Kendall Hackney led Northwestern (13-17), the No. 10 seed, with 13 points and four steals. Karly Roser scored 11 points, Alex Cohen scored 10 and Dannielle Diamant had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Wisconsin 58, Illinois 57: Morgan Paige scored 18 points, including two free throws with 3 seconds remaining, and 11th-seeded Wisconsin beat Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

The Badgers (12-18), who will play Purdue in today's quarterfinals, were 21 of 21 from the free-throw line.

Ivory Crawford led the sixth-seeded Illini (16-13) with 14 points.

Ohio State 58, Minnesota 47: Tayler Hill scored 25 points to help Ohio State (18-12) beat Minnesota (18-13) in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference tournament.

Ashley Adams added 14 points and eight rebounds for the ninth-seeded Buckeyes, who advanced to face top-seeded and eighth-ranked Penn State in the quarterfinals today.
