Hummel scores 17 in Purdue loss

December 03, 2011 5:01 pm  •

Tu Holloway scored 21 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the last two minutes, and No. 11 Xavier roared back from a 19-point second-half deficit to pull out a 66-63 win over Purdue on Saturday.

After Purdue's Robbie Hummel, a Valparaiso native, tied the game with a free throw with 55.8 seconds left, Holloway calmly sank his third straight 3-pointer with 40 seconds.

Xavier (6-0) committed 22 turnovers but still pulled out its second consecutive comeback win.

Hummel scored 17 points to lead the Boilermakers (7-2), who played their first game of the season on an opponent's home court.

Purdue coach Matt Painter wasn't able to have Hummel on the court for the last 22 seconds. Leg cramps kept the All-America candidate on the bench as Purdue scrambled to sink a game-tying 3-pointer.

"He's fine," Painter said. "He just had cramps."

Illinois 82, No. 19 Gonzaga 75: Meyers Leonard scored 21 points and helped Illinois hold Gonzaga's Robert Sacre to two second-half points.

Sacre finished with 16 points. But he went scoreless for more than 20 minutes.  Illinois rotated its big men - the 7-1 Leonard, 6-8 Tyler Griffey and freshmen 6-8 Ibby Djimde and 6-11 Nnanna Egwu - on Sacre.

With Sacre invisible in the second half, the Illini (8-0) went on a 7-0 run.

Leonard, with 3:38 left in the game, drew a charge from Sacre and the packed Assembly Hall erupted as Sacre walked to the bench.

Illinois rode the momentum of that loud home crowd and carried a lead through much of the first half.

Ball St. 71, U-T Martin, 48:  Jarrod Jones scored 22 points and Ball State pulled away in the second half Saturday for its fourth consecutive victory, 71-48 over Tennessee-Martin.

After leading 25-18 at halftime, the Cardinals (4-2) took control with a 29-6 run to begin the second half. Jones started that run with a dunk and got 13 of his points in the final 20 minutes.

Ball State shot 72 percent (18 of 25) in the second half, including 7 of 8 from 3-point range.

Jesse Berry finished with 15 points and Randy Davis 10 for Ball State.

Michigan 76, Iowa State 66:  Fred Hoiberg has some coaching work to do after his Iowa State team let two bad stretches essentially decide the game.

The Cyclones let Michigan go on two runs of about five minutes each, and it was enough to cost Iowa State a 76-66 loss Saturday at the 14th-ranked Wolverines.

Michigan had a 13-2 run to end the first half and a 16-2 surge early in the second half.

"That's a quality win," Michigan coach John Beilein said.

No. 2 Ohio State 64, Texas Pan Am 35: Texas-Pan American coach Ryan Marks put the 64-35 defeat to No. 2 Ohio State in perspective on Saturday.

Despite trailing 31-14 at halftime, the deficit was less than No. 3 Duke faced in an 85-63 loss to the Buckeyes on Tuesday.

"I was kidding with our guys at halftime that at least we know we're a little bit better than Duke, as they were down 19 points at the half and we were only down 17," he said. "Obviously, it was a unique experience for our players to play in a game of this nature."

Deshaun Thomas also had 11 points for the Buckeyes to give coach Thad Matta his 300th win. He is 300-88 over 12 seasons, the last eight at Ohio State where he is 198-57.

Minnesota 55, USC 40: Lamenting the loss of Trevor Mbakwe in the form of self-pity was going to do Minnesota's players no good.

In their first week without their injured star, the Gophers handled his absence with calm and confidence on their way to a couple of victories.

Rodney Williams had 12 points plus nine rebounds and four steals to give Minnesota some energy for a 55-40 victory over struggling Southern California on Saturday.

"Any time two of your better players and veterans go down, you might start to worry," Williams said, "but we've got a group of young guys that are ready and focused who can come in and get the job done."

Iowa 75, Brown 54: Melsahn Basabe had 14 points and 10 rebounds to help Iowa beat Brown 75-54 on Saturday.

Roy Devyn Marble added 11 points off the bench for Iowa (5-3), which had lost three of its last four games.

Andrew McCarthy scored 17 points for Brown (4-5).

Iowa jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first seven minutes and led 38-24 at halftime.
