R.J. Curington was a star at Kahler Middle School in the seventh grade six years ago. Then, the Dyer resident chose to leave the area and attend Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.
Curington is coming home, though. He recently verbally committed to play college basketball at DePaul.
His parents, Rolando and Jacquelyn, will finally get to see their son play without buying a plane ticket.
"I've had a good season, it's gone well," Curington said on Sunday afternoon. "Coming home is nice, but I also like what they're trying to do (at DePaul). They're trying to bring back the Mark Aguirre days.
"I'm excited to be a part of that."
Curington, whose sister Rolanda, plays basketball for Lake Central's girls team, had many other offers on the table. Among those at the top of the list were Michigan State, Texas, Xavier, Rutgers, Georgia, Arkansas and Purdue.
The 6-foot-5 guard is averaging 18 points, five rebounds and four assists for one of the nation's top basketball prep schools.
Curington said he has a strong bond with former Bowman Academy star DeJuan Marrero, who is a freshman at DePaul.
"I'm very comfortable with (DePaul)," Curington said. "I have an opportunity to play in a big conference, the Big East, and to play early. It's a great school and I'm looking forward to his opportunity."
