BLOOMINGTON | No. 1 Indiana has lost sophomore forward Austin Etherington for the rest of the season because of a fractured left kneecap.
Etherington was hurt late in the first half of Saturday night's 100-69 victory over Central Connecticut State. After being called for a foul on the play, he stayed on the ground and was surrounded by teammates and coaches. He was lifted onto a stretcher and pointed to the crowd as he was wheeled off the court.
On Sunday, the team said Etherington had season-ending surgery.
Etherington's playing time had steadily increased as the Hoosiers (9-0) moved through the nonconference schedule.
No. 15 Purdue women survive Tennessee-Martin 68-60: Sam Ostarello scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half and Taylor Manuel also scored 16 as No. 15 Purdue overcame a challenge from Tennessee-Martin to win 68-60 Sunday after trailing at halftime.
The Boilermakers (9-1) opened the second half with a 15-0 run, including nine points by Ostarello, to lead 40-29.
Purdue shot 53.8 percent (14 of 26) in the second half to 26.7 percent (8 of 30) for the Skyhawks (4-7) and out-rebounded them 24-11.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Katie Schubert and Heather Butler gave the Skyhawks a 17-16 lead with 7:48 left in the first half. The lead reached seven points, 27-20, after 3-pointers by Jasmine Newsome and Schubert.
Ostarello and Drey Mingo each grabbed 10 rebounds for Purdue, with Mingo also scoring 11 points. KK Houser had eight assists.
Butler scored 28 points and Newsome 21 for Tennessee-Martin, which lost 65-39 at Purdue last season.
DePaul routs Milwaukee 84-50: Donnavan Kirk tied a career high with 14 points and Jamee Crockett added 13 points and six rebounds to lead DePaul to an 84-50 rout of Milwaukee on Sunday night.
DePaul (6-3) used an early 14-0 run to jump out to a 21-8 lead. Moses Morgan made two 3-pointers and made a nice pass to Cleveland Melvin for an alley-oop dunk during the span for the Blue Demons.
Brandon Young scored 13 points and Melvin finished with 11 points and three blocks in a game where DePaul led by as many as 41. The Panthers beat the Blue Demons last season.
DePaul held Milwaukee's leading scorer Jordan Aaron to six points on 2-for-11 shooting. Paris Gulley led Milwaukee (3-7) with 14 points.
The Blue Demons held Milwaukee to 25.8 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers.
