Michigan State holds off Novak, Michigan
EAST LANSING, Mich. | Draymond Green had 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 9 Michigan State to a 64-54 win over No. 23 Michigan on Sunday, backing up his guarantee of a victory.
The Spartans (18-5, 7-3 Big Ten) ended a three-game skid in the rivalry and moved into sole possession of second place in the conference behind third-ranked Ohio State.
The Wolverines (17-7, 7-4) haven't won or lost consecutive games in nearly a month.
Green played, as he promised, with a sprained left knee and the senior had the best game of his career in the series.
Michigan's Tim Hardaway Jr. missed his first six shots and had a season-low four points. Teammate Trey Burke had made only one shot before his 3-pointer just before halftime pulled the Wolverines within eight points. He finished with 11 points.
Cleveland State 70, UIC 42
CHICAGO | Jeremy Montgomery made four 3-pointers and led four teammates in double figures with 14 points as Cleveland State beat Illinois-Chicago 70-42 on Sunday.
Trevon Harmon added 13 points for the Vikings (20-4, 10-2), who have won five straight lead the Horizon League by a half-game over Valparaiso. Cleveland State reached the 20-victory mark for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Anton Grady had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Tim Kamczyc had 10 points and Aaron Pogue blocked five shots for the Vikings, who made 56 percent of their shots from the field. They made 63 percent in the second half, including 73 percent (8 of 11) from 3-point range to pull away from a 24-17 halftime margin.
Darrin Williams led the Flames (7-16, 3-10) with 12 points and three blocks. Hayden Humes scored 11 points and Daniel Barnes had 10 points and four steals. UIC shot 27 percent.
Youngstown State 80, Loyola 63
CHICAGO | Kendrick Perry's 28 points led Youngstown State to an 80-63 victory over Loyola of Chicago on Sunday.
Perry, a sophomore who nearly matched his career best of 30 set last Tuesday in a win at Milwaukee, was 11 for 14 from the field on Sunday, and also contributed seven steals and six assists.
Blake Allen scored 19 points, Damian Eargle added 12 and Ashen Ward finished with 11 points for the Penguins (13-10, 8-5), whose Horizon League win total is their highest since joining 11 seasons ago. They shot 63 percent from the field on Sunday.
Youngstown led 37-30 at halftime, began the second half with a 9-0 run and led by double figures the rest of the way.
Walt Gibler led the Ramblers with 18 points and Jordan Hicks added 16. Loyola (5-18, 0-13) has dropped 11 straight since beating Canisius on Dec. 22.
Women's basketball
No. 15 Purdue 77, Illinois 66
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. | Sam Ostarello scored a career-high 21 points and matched her season-high with 13 rebounds to help Purdue remain on top of the Big Ten with a victory over Illinois.
Courtney Moses also had 21 points for the Boilermakers (19-5, 9-2 Big Ten), who were coming off a thrilling triple overtime loss to Nebraska on Thursday. They moved a half-game in front of the Cornhuskers in the conference standings.
Adrienne Godbold scored 25 points and Alex Burke added 17 for Illinois (8-16, 2-9).
