Alex Austin admits he was a little concerned and it was getting a little late.
The Mount Carmel senior was coming off a good year in which he averaged 18.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and he was the Tony Lawless Award winner in the Catholic League South. The prestigious award goes to the top senior in the league. Still, few schools were showing interest in the Chicago resident.
He said interest picked up in the spring when he played AAU ball for the Illinois Wolves and that led to some colleges taking a look at him. Earlier this week, he committed to Eastern Illinois and new coach Jay Spoonhour. Austin said he will sign his letter of intent on Tuesday.
"I am real excited because they recruited me and wanted me to play there," Austin said. "I know I will have a chance to make an impact right away, and that is what I wanted."
Austin, the son of former Indiana Mr. Basketball and Purdue star Woody Austin, said he wants to be part of Spoonhour's rebuilding process.
"I think we can turn it around and I will have to be one of the players who will be a part of that," Austin said. "I just want to play hard and show what I can do."
Austin made 70 3-pointers last season as he was 42 percent from behind the 3-point arc. He had a 48 percent field goal percentage.
