Ashley Collins is doing some repeat business.

One year after leading NJCAA Division III in scoring, the Crown Point grad is at it again. As a sophomore midfielder for the No. 2-ranked College of DuPage women's soccer team, Collins is the national pacesetter once more with 61 points, garnered on 15 goals and 31 assists.

Her best single-match efforts include a three-goal outing versus South Suburban College on Sept. 14 and four-assist performance against Joliet Junior College on Tuesday. Collins, who failed to collect a point in only two of the Chaparrals' first 18 matches, finished the 2008 season with 30 goals and 80 points.

Senior midfielder Kara Georgeff (Highland) and sophomore goaltender Stephanie Bodamer (Highland) played pivotal roles in Southern Indiana's 2-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan last week. Georgeff's third goal of the season, which she headed into the net off a corner kick, was the match-winning tally for the Screaming Eagles.

Bodamer ensured that lead would stand as she made six saves in recording her eighth triumph. The local pair helped Southern Indiana qualify for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament for the first time since 2005.

Senior midfielder Melissa Plesac (Hobart) passed out an assist in the University of Chicago's 7-0 win over Anderson on Oct. 21. Plesac, who has started seven times for the NCAA Division III 16th-ranked Maroons and appeared in a total of 15 matches, has five assists this season.

Men's soccer

Midfielder Rudy Baldetti (Highland) scored twice and set up Ancilla College's third goal by drawing a key penalty, as the Chargers blanked the University of St. Francis JV squad 3-0 on Oct. 22. In addition, Baldetti and six other sophomores -- including fellow Region products Tim Huesca (Lake Central), Sergio Garcia (Washington Twp.) and Juan Guzman (LaPorte) -- were recognized for their contributions to Ancilla soccer the past two years on "Sophomore Night."

"These men have meant everything to us in terms of the success we've had," Chargers coach James Drzewiecki said on the school's athletic Web site. "I can never thank them enough for all they've done for the team and for the college."

Cross country

Junior Randall Quirk (Boone Grove) was IPFW's top finisher and 27th overall at the Sam Bell Invitational after covering the 8K course in 27:27.17. He finished five spots ahead of Wabash College's Justin Allen (Hobart), who was clocked in 27:50.03.

Both the Mastodons and Little Giants had two other area runners compete in the meet. Representing IPFW were sophomore Alex Quick (Portage) and junior Erich Campbell (Boone Grove), who were 45th and 48th in respective times of 29:45.11 and 30:24.65.

Sophomores Michael Gough (Merrillville) and Matt Meyer (Valparaiso) ran for Wabash. Gough was 41st in 28:54.14 and Meyer took 52nd place in 32:03.60.

Football

Senior Tim Handlon (Valparaiso) registered a team-high 11 tackles last Saturday in Yale's 9-0 loss to Ivy League foe Penn. The linebacker's 35 total tackles -- including 20 solos -- is tops for the Bulldogs.

Handlon also has two interceptions, four pass breakups and a forced fumble this fall.

William Bork (Lake Central) caught his first two passes of the year for Butler, good for 11 yards, as the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten with 23-16 win over Campbell last Saturday. Also contributing to the victory was sophomore place-kicker David Lang (Lowell), who booted a 21-yard field goal and two extra points.

Equestrian

Freshman Indy Roper (Wheeler) leads the Western Section of Auburn's top-ranked squad. She is 4-0 with three MVP honors.
