History repeated itself for Ali Bishel, albeit with a two-year window separating the events.
After missing the 2008 cross country season with an injury, the Ball State junior regained her 2007 form by once again getting named to the All-Mid-American Conference first team. The Chesterton grad's latest honor came in the wake of a fourth-place showing in the MAC Cross Country Championship at Ohio University Golf Course.
Bishel clocked a 22:33.0 on the 6K course, which put her just 14.8 seconds behind the meet winner. Teammate Sarah Kehe (Chesterton) was the second Cardinal down the chute as she finished the race in 24:20.3, good for 53rd place overall.
Golf
Western Illinois' Andrew Godfrey (Homewood-Flossmoor) finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate meet at the Links Novadell in Clarksville, Tenn. Godfrey shot a three-round total of 213, which was 3-under par and just five strokes behind the tournament champion, and his score of 69 tied for the second-lowest round on the final day.
The Leathernecks were fourth in the team standings, six shots in back of event winner Eastern Kentucky.
Football
DePauw junior defensive lineman Tyler Doane (Valparaiso) recorded five tackles and two sacks for minus-19 yards in the Tigers' 35-21 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Birmingham Southern last Saturday.
Junior Paul Gbur (Lake Central) had two tackles for DePauw versus Birmingham and returned three kickoffs a total of 60 yards. Junior punter Adam Hill (Lake Central) averaged 40.2 yards on four kicks.
Junior fullback Eric Ritter (Griffith) had touchdowns runs of 1, 2 and 14 yards for Benedictine University, as the Eagles posted a 32-6 victory over Rockford College. Ritter, now in his third year as a starter, finished with 62 rushing yards on 11 carries.
Redshirt freshman Sam Jaeger (Chesterton) has seen action in several games for Western Michigan this fall. The 6-foot-5, 323-pounder is playing on the Broncos' offensive line.
Men's soccer
Sophomore Rudy Baldetti (Highland) was one of three Ancilla College players chosen for the NJCAA All-Region 12 squad. He was the only first-team selection.
Baldetti closed his two-year career with the Chargers as their No. 3 all-time scorer with eight goals and eight assists. Seven of the tallies and six assists came after he was moved from sweeper to center midfielder three matches into the 2009 season, and Baldetti recorded at least one point in eight of his final 11 matches.
Playing in 17 matches, freshman forward Jent Botterman (Illiana Christian) tied for sixth among DePauw players with five points this season, which were accrued on a goal and three assists. Also on the Tigers' roster were sophomore midfielder Michael Pavell (Valparaiso) and freshman goaltender Tony Halterman (Lake Central).
Women's basketball
Sophomore guard Lizzie Stapke (Highland) had nine points, six rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes as IU-South Bend opened its 2009-10 season with an 84-65 win over Wilberforce. Sophomore center Becca Hoefler (Valparaiso) added six points, two rebounds and one assist.
Freshman guard Jordan Kramer (Hanover Central) is also a member of the Titans' roster.
Volleyball
Junior middle hitter Sara Ooms (Illiana Christian) had 13 kills to lead Trinity Christian to a four-game victory over Judson. Adding eight kills apiece for the Trolls were sophomore outside hitter Karley VanDyke (Kouts), freshman outside hitter Jamie Lowther (Washington Twp.) and freshman outside hitter Taylor Lee (Munster). VanDyke also collected 25 digs.
Ooms was an all-tournament pick as Trinity went 1-3 in an event at Taylor University in Upland. She produced 36 kills and 13 blocks, while VanDyke chipped in 31 kills and 43 digs.
