HAMMOND | Coming out of Hammond High in 2008, DaLita Scott wanted to pave a better future for herself using the talent she had at her disposal.
Scott attended John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill., where she starred on the women's basketball team for two years.
Scott's success paid off earlier this week when the Hammond native received a scholarship offer from Florida Atlantic. Scott will join the Owls this fall and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"My whole purpose of going to junior college was to play at a higher level," Scott said. "I'm basically helping myself progress in life and doing something I love doing at the same time."
Scott visited FAU -- in Boca Raton -- earlier this month and didn't hesitate when the school sent scholarship papers last week.
"I got them, read them and sent them right back with my name on them," Scott said. "I'm very excited to have this opportunity."
Scott, a first-team member of the 2008 Times All-Area girls basketball team, averaged nearly 12 points and five rebounds a game through her two-year career at John A. Logan. Scott shot 48 percent from the field as a sophomore and scored a career-high 22 points against Wabash Valley on Feb. 13.
Scott selected Florida Atlantic over Georgia State and expects to major in computer science.
