VALPARAISO | A matchup of the Pioneer Football League's two worst teams Saturday meant little outside the confines of Valparaiso's Brown Field.

But to the players and coaches involved, it meant the world. Particularly for Valparaiso senior defensive end Adam Rundh.

Playing in his final game, Rundh was credited with 12 tackles, including two sacks, and blocked an extra point as the Crusaders lost to Morehead State 29-6.

"This was my last chance so I had to make something happen," Rundh said while holding back tears. "It doesn't matter what the scoreboard said, you have to play to the best of your ability and this is how I wanted to go out."

Going out was the underlying theme of the day.

Valpo finished a miserable season 1-10, including 0-8 in the PFL, losing its last nine games. Speculation is rampant that head coach Stacy Adams, with a five-year record of 15-40, could be fired.

Athletic director Mark LaBarbera said all coaches of every program are evaluated after the season, and he had nothing to announce. When asked if he believed he would be back next year, Adams was noncommittal.

"I hope so," Adams said. "It is out of my hands, it's in God's hands."

Early season-ending injuries to quarterback Matt Upshaw and running backs John Popper and Ross Wiemer contributed to Valpo's offensive woes throughout the year.

Against Morehead (3-8, 1-7), the Crusaders actually put together a scoring drive early in the game. Quarterback Nate Goergen connected with Sean McCarty for an 11-yard score at 7:54 of the first quarter, but the extra point was blocked.

The drive, Valpo's second series of the game, covered 58 yards on eight plays.

The Crusaders would finish with just 137 yards of offense, including a miserable 15 net rushing yards on 16 attempts.

"It was tough," Adams said. "I've had to hide my injuries and play with the guys we had."

Early in the game, Valpo's defense stiffened in the red zone, leading to a pair of field goals by Morehead's Ranier Duzan for a 6-6 tie at the half.

But the Eagles got a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown by J.D. Cecil early in the fourth quarter to go up 15-6.

Cecil returned another interception 46 yards late in the fourth quarter, setting up a 3-yard TD by Jerrod Pendleton for a 22-6 advantage.
