Harangody sets another record in Notre Dame win

Senior becomes first Irish player to compile 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds

SOUTH BEND | Another double-double, another record, another milestone, another ho-hum night for Luke Harangody.

The Andrean grad became the seventh Notre Dame basketball player to score 2,000 career points and the first to combine that figure with 1,000 rebounds, as his 27 points and 12 boards paced Notre Dame to an 80-70 victory over visiting Idaho State.

As has been the case this winter, Harangody did a little bit of everything for the Irish, attacking the rim, working his mid-range game and hitting both of his 3-point attempts.

And as has been custom throughout his career, Harangody again reached a new level of greatness.

"That's one thing I never thought would happen in my career here," Harangody said of reaching 2,000 points. "I just wanted to come in here when I was a freshman, I just thought I would a player and do the small things."

The 6-foot-8 forward from Schererville now stands sixth on Notre Dame's career scoring list, as he passed former Irish star and current Indiana Pacer Troy Murphy. His 2,025 career points are just 535 less than Austin Carr's all-time record of 2,560.

"It is staggering, really. I use the phrase machine-like," Irish coach Mike Brey said of Harangody. "And you see it on game nights. This is practice, too. ... He only knows one way."

Harangody's "one way" has led the Irish to a 7-1 record, but Tuesday's win didn't come easily. The visiting Bengals (2-5) found an offensive rhythm in the first half and trailed by only three at the intermission.

"In the first half, I didn't have us out pressuring the ball, maybe, as much as I should, so that's on me," Brey said. "Second half, we did a better job of that."

That added pressure keyed an 18-5 run to open the second frame that pushed the Irish away for good. And when the final horn blew, the latest Notre Dame victory again was captained by Harangody.

"I talked about it with my parents a couple days ago, and they never thought so either. I don't think anybody had any idea," Harangody said of what he would eventually accomplish. "I think that's what makes it cool, too."
