Forget about a diamond in the rough. How about a diamond in goal?
If you’re looking for a solid goal keeper who’s quietly making a name for himself, look no further than Tony Halterman and what he’s been doing at DePauw University in Greencastle.
The Lake Central grad has been a master between the pipes for the Tigers, who are ranked 25th nationally in Division-III. The two-year starter was a big reason why DePauw went more than 660 minutes before allowing an opposing player to score a goal.
“Tony has developed beyond our expectations,” DePauw coach Brad Hauter said. “He’s already drawing interest from pro scouts, and I’m really excited to watch how the rest of his collegiate career unfolds.”
The Tigers (5-1-2) are 47-11-5 since Halterman arrived on campus.
“Physically there is nothing that Tony is incapable of doing,” Hauter said. “His athleticism and passion have made him one of the country’s elite collegiate goal keepers. He is tireless in his work ethic and is incredibly coachable.”
Also pitching in for the Tigers is Valparaiso grad Patrick Reineke. Reineke scored the game-winner with 6:03 left in DePauw’s 2-1 victory over visiting Denison on Sept. 15, helping the Tigers rally for the win with two second-half goals.
Volleyball
Tiffany Madura (Munster) was named the NJCAA D-II Player of the Week on Sept. 5 with her efforts in leading Vincennes University to six victories.
The sophomore front-liner racked up 27 blocks – 12 of which were solo – in a 3-0 sweep over Macomb (Mich.) Community College. Madura assisted on 10 blocks and notched two more on her own. The 6-foot Madura also reached double figures in kills in two of the Trailblazers’ eight matches and recorded six aces.
Fellow Munster grad Heather Boyan has been on fire for the Western Kentucky women’s team. The 24th-ranked Hilltoppers have depended on Boyan plenty this season. The sophomore had 12 block kills, tying the WKU mark for second most block kills in a game, during a tournament at the University of Virginia. On the season Boyan is third on the team with 134 kills and has a .322 attack percentage.
Western Kentucky also won a tournament at the University of Michigan last weekend, going 3-0 with wins over the hosts, Duke and Eastern Michigan. Boyan was voted to the All-Tourney team.
Football
Zach Breuckman (Crown Point) has helped Wabash to a 2-1 record this season. The 6-foot-2, 258-pound defensive lineman has one sack and eight tackles. His younger brother, Drew Breuckman, is a freshman defensive lineman on the team.
