Former Valparaiso men's basketball coach Homer Drew and wife Janet have both recently been diagnosed with cancer.
Drew confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday evening but declined to elaborate on the types of cancer or when the diagnosis occurred.
"Janet and I would like to thank everyone for their well-wishes and prayers," Drew said. "We are very appreciative of the support from our family and friends, as well as the Valparaiso community."
Word of the diagnosis became public Tuesday evening when former Valparaiso men's basketball player Brandon Wood tweeted about a phone call he received from Drew. Wood played two seasons at Valpo, and transferred to Michigan State after completing his undergraduate degree in May.
Wood tweeted the following on Tuesday: "Just got off the phone with my coach from Valpo Homer Drew who put me in the position to have the opportunity to play here at MSU."
That was followed by a second tweet: "Everybody pray for my coach at Valpo Homer Drew and his wife who were both just diagnosed with cancer."
Drew was the head men's basketball coach at Valpo for 22 years before retiring last May. He is currently listed as the an associate athletic director at the university.
Homer and Janet Drew have three children -- Scott, Dana and Bryce -- and seven grandchildren.
