Homer Drew
Men's basketball coach, 1988-2002, 2003-2011
A fixture on the sidelines for more than two decades, Drew led the Crusaders to 371 victories and nine postseason appearances. Drew ended his career, which included stints at Bethel and Indiana South Bend, with 640 wins in 34 seasons. He ranked sixth among active Division I coaches at the time of his retirement. The nine postseason appearances included seven trips to the NCAA tournament, highlighted by the Crusaders' run to the Sweet 16 in 1998. A four-time Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year, Drew led Valpo to eight regular-season conference championships, eight conference tournament titles and 10 20-win seasons. He had 35 players go on to play pro basketball or baseball. Drew also has been honored as one of the 150 most influential people in school history and was presented in 1999 with the Lumen Christi Medal, VU's highest honor, in recognition of a lay person's distinguished service to church and society. He also received the Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner's Award of Merit in 2002 and was honored with the Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award in 1998. In 2010, the basketball court at the Athletics-Recreation Center was named in his honor. He is currently an associate director of athletics at VU.
Katie (Bova) Hoffmann
Volleyball, 2002-2005
One of the top setters all-time, Hoffmann helped lead the Crusaders' volleyball program to three Mid-Continent Conference titles as well as three NCAA tournament appearances. A two-time First Team All-Mid-Con selection, Hoffmann was named the Mid-Con's Setter of the Year in 2004 and 2005. She was the 2004 conference tournament MVP and still ranks fourth all-time in school history with 3,061 career assists. Hoffmann ranks eighth on the career charts with 1,308 digs. A co-captain as a senior, she earned a pair of Mid-Con Player of the Week accolades during her career and was named the MVP in four in-season tournaments. Hoffmann is currently a statistics coordinator for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers.
Dr. James Malayter, M.D.
Football, 1962-1965; Team physician, 1983-2007
A fixture around the VU sports medicine program for more than two decades, Malayter served as the school's physician for all sports. He would routinely travel with the basketball programs, especially to the Mid-Continent Conference tournaments. Malayter, a 1966 VU graduate, played football for four seasons. He was a member of the Crusaders' 1964 Indiana Collegiate Conference championship team. Malayter went on to become an orthopedic surgeon and was the president of Lakeshore Bone and Joint Institute until his retirement in 2007.
Lauren (Moulton) Marshall
Volleyball, 2002-2005
A force from the right side, Marshall ranks as one of the top hitters in school history. The 2004 Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year, she helped lead Valpo to three Mid-Con titles as well as three NCAA tournament appearances. A three-time All-Mid-Con selection, including twice as a member of the First Team, Marshall still holds the school's career hitting percentage record at .280. She also still ranks in the top five all-time with 1,195 kills and 404 blocks. As a rookie she was named to the Mid-Con All-Freshman Team and was also selected as Valpo's female Newcomer of the Year by SAAC. Marshall was a three-time member of the Mid-Con's All-Academic Team as well. Marshall currently is a senior designer for DuPage Credit Union.
Tom Smith
Basketball, 1962-1966 (player), 1980-1988 (head coach )
Among the winningest coaches in college basketball history, Smith was an excellent player in the 1960s before taking over as Valpo's second Division I head coach in 1980. During his playing days he was an Associated Press Honorable Mention Little All-American in 1966, the same season he was named the team's MVP. The captain of the 1965-1966 squad, Smith helped guide the Crusaders to the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament under coach Gene Bartow. He took over the Valpo program as the head coach in 1980 before moving on to Missouri Western State University in 1988, where he is still coaching. Smith has led the Griffons to five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships, 11 NCAA Division II national tournament appearances, and won his 600th collegiate game on Nov. 13, 2010. He is the winningest coach both in Missouri Western and MIAA history. Smith has been elected to both the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as well as the Missouri Western State University Hall of Fame.
Russ Steinbeck
Baseball, 1964-1967
One of the top outfielders ever to play baseball at Valpo, Steinbeck helped lead the Crusaders to a pair of Indiana Collegiate Conference championships as well as two NCAA tournament berths during his career. Named to the College Division All-America First Team in 1966, Steinbeck was a team co-captain that same season. He was the team's season statistical leader in batting, runs scored, home runs and runs batted in, and in 1966 set what was then a single-season school record with eight doubles. Steinbeck was a two-time Indiana Collegiate Conference First Team pick and was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player in 1966, a year in which he hit .367. Steinbeck retired in financial management for the Department of the Navy.
