VALPARAISO | On Sunday, 450 fans packed the ballroom of the Harre Union along with the Valparaiso players, cheerleaders and band to learn the team's NCAA fate.

"This team never quit during a game or throughout the season," said Ken Hill, a 1977 VU graduate and season-ticket holder since the mid-1990s.

Valparaiso is seeded 14th in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament and will face No. 3 Michigan State on Thursday in Auburn Hills, Mich. When it was announced on screen during the Selection Show on CBS, everyone erupted in applause, primarily due to the proximity of the game.

Hill is pleased the game isn't far from home.

"Michigan State is a tough team," Hill said. "(Tom) Izzo is a great coach, and I don't think he'll let his team get caught sleeping."
