STEVE HANLON: You must believe in the power of the beard

Predicting title winners has been a tradition for sports scribblers. So it's time for your above-the-rim Nostradamus to slip on his Air Jordans, comb the cookie crumbs out of the beard and let you know who will win our local sectionals and the state championships.

This is as good as gold, almost guaranteed when the sectionals tip off on Tuesday. I am the Johnny Weir of region hoops.

Class A

Morgan Twp. Sectional: OK, I'll never write anything negative about Morgan. Breakfast is too expensive these days, especially for champions. But the Cherokees are not winning.

It will be Marquette over 21st Century in a close game.

Culver Sectional: Isn't Culver a suburb of Cleveland? Enjoy that drive folks. Both of you. Culver will be leading Triton by a point in the semifinal, but will be called for a T for slapping the restroom door. Triton wins it all.

Barr-Reeve will win it all at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on March 29.

Class 2A

Hebron Sectional: The championship game is on Tuesday night when Bishop Noll plays Lake Station. Get the ladders our after this one because these are the best two teams.

With nervous knuckles I'll take Noll, knowing the Eagles are good enough to pull an upset.

Rensselaer Sectional: The Bombers move down to 2A and they get to host. The mojo is good. I'll take the hosts here while everyone else is picking North Judson or Winamac.

Home cook'n is good. It's even better at the Wagon Wheel. The Wagon Blaster is as good as cutting down the nets.

We'll get a rematch at state, Park Tudor vs. Bishop Noll. Tudor will cut down the nets again.

Class 3A

Hammond Sectional: The lights will be on in the Civic Center. Yeah, baby. But that's the only drama here. Bowman wins first, second and third here. Not a close second.

Griffith is sputtering and Hammond lost Antonio Poole. Eagles. Period.

Kankakee Valley Sectional: Get out the gas cards, kids. The state's most geographically dysfunctional sectional motors on. Why not put Evansville Bosse in here, too?

I'll pick Andrean by a hair. Not much more.

It will be Bowman vs. Greensburg in the 3A final. Bowman wins again. Yawn.

Class 4A

East Chicago Sectional: Now from bad to good. This is the area's top sectional. Lake Central is your top team and if the Indians play their best no one can beat them.

Munster will come out of the other side. L.C. will survive E.C. in the semifinal. Indians win. But close.

Valparaiso Sectional: Vikings Gym gets to host the area's most even sectional. I don't even want to pick this one; like choosing Powerball numbers.

I'll take Crown Point out of the top and Valpo out of the bottom and the Vikes will win on Saturday.

Lake Central will get to semistate. If Carmel is there L.C. loses. If not, L.C. gets to Indy. Drum roll, please. Tough. Hmmm. Lake Central beats Indianapolis Tech in Indy on the 29th.

If we get three teams down south like I predicted I'm going to Sochi to bring back a stranded puppy.

Good luck gentlemen. Start your engines. Roll.
