Other local golfers had more birdies during Wednesday's opening round of the Northern Amateur, but recent Valparaiso grad Bobby Jacobs had a more consistent outing.
Jacobs birdied No. 3 and No. 15 at Sand Creek Country Club and sits tied for 13th at 74. The Bradley recruit also had four bogeys, including one on the final hole.
Jacobs, who placed 85th last year, is five shots off the lead of Jack Perry, who hails from Santa Barbara, Calif. Perry had four birdies.
Jacobs is the top local golfer.
Former teammate and Illinois State recruit Kyle Meihofer tripled Jacobs' birdie total. Meihofer, who is tied for 17th at 75, also had seven bogeys and a double bogey on No. 17.
Indiana golfer and Crown Point alum Nick Grubnich is tied for 28th with a 76. Grubnich had three birdies, but he also double-bogeyed No. 9 and No. 13.
IUPUI golfer and LaPorte grad Jordan Lenard is tied for 42nd at 77. He had four birdies, but he also double-bogeyed No. 3 and No. 18.
Valparaiso native Jeff Ryan, the current Sand Creek Club champion, is tied for 52nd at 79. His lone birdie was on No. 18.
Chesterton alums and brothers Ryan and Kyle Grassel each had a birdie in their rounds. Ryan is tied for 60th at 80, while Kyle is tied for 70th at 81.
Chesterton's Patrick Herrod, a former teammate of the Grassels, is 89th with an 89. He also had a single birdie in his round.
The second round begins at 7 a.m. today, while the final round is Friday.
