VALPARAISO | After Times No. 8 Crown Point won its first two games fairly handily against Valparaiso on Thursday night, a routine win seemed all but complete.
However, the Vikings put together an unlikely comeback, winning three straight sets to take the Duneland Athletic Conference match 17-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-11.
Lacking communication and execution, the Vikings (6-9, 3-2) were "out of wack," according to coach Katie Lenard. That made her team's resiliency all the more impressive, she said.
"In the third game I was proud of the way they came out with a clear head," Lenard said.
That collective clear head led to a boost in confidence. The Vikings came out strong in the third set, led by the solid play of juniors Jordan Snapp (15 kills, one block) and Alli Hauser (19 assists, seven digs and two aces).
The Bulldogs (7-4, 2-3 DAC) kept it close in each of the remaining three sets, but C.P. coach Rick Ashmore said his team lost its intensity as Valpo came roaring back.
"We got very lazy on defense," he said. "Valpo out-hustled us and outworked us."
The Bulldogs had chances to put the Vikings away, but Valpo had an answer each time. In the fourth set, Crown Point pulled ahead 21-18, but the Vikings rallied with a 7-2 run to force the fifth and deciding set.
Lenard said she hopes to see her team carry the momentum from the comeback, which put the Vikes over .500 in the DAC, through the remainder of the season.
"It was an important game," Lenard said. "All the teams in the DAC are good, but when you're at that .500 mark, you want to take it above that. I hope we take this (win) and build on it for the next game."
