CALUMET CITY | T.F. South baseball coach Matt Tiffy is confident his team is playing its best baseball of the season.
The Rebels used a six-run third inning to overcome South Suburban Blue Conference rival T.F. North 8-5 on Wednesday night.
Kyle Janowski was 2-4 with two doubles, four RBIs, and two runs scored for the Rebels. Brian Seymour drew three walks at the plate for the Rebels, scored two runs, and recorded an RBI. Starter Mike Broadwell went five innings for the Rebels, striking out five while allowing three runs.
"We've got a young team and they've been learning," Tiffy said. "We're getting there. I think we're playing our best ball now."
The Rebels six-run third was highlighted by a bases clearing double by Janowski that put T.F. South up 4-0. Seymour walked in the first run of the inning in the previous at bat to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
After Janowski, Alex Schell drove in the Rebel cleanup hitter to put the Rebels up 5-0 before later coming around to score himself. Meteor starter Sergio Esquivia walked four batters in the third.
"I'm just basically seeing the pitch and hitting it hard," Janowski said. "We're all coming together and doing our job and doing what we have to do."
The Meteors (14-16, 4-12) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth but were never able to get closer in the game. T.F. South (13-14, 9-7) added two runs in the seventh before the Meteors scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
"We had a three-run inning," T.F. North coach Mike Kosiara said. "We had it going and all we needed was a base hit to open it up but we didn't get it."
T.F. North honored longtime athletic director Therese McLaughlin before the game in a pregame ceremony. McLaughlin is stepping down as AD but will remain with the school and still be an active part of Meteor athletics.
