HAMMOND | Since the inception of the Great Lakes Athletic Conference, Clark has never finished a baseball season without a share of the conference title.
Last year marked the first loss to a GLAC school, but with Wednesday's 2-0 win against Morton, the Pioneers finished their 2012 conference season unbeaten to capture yet another title.
"Even with only four players coming back, we're real young, but we were still able to do it," second baseman Jerald Morgan said. "It's exciting to be able to play in this situation (for a conference title) every year."
Clark pitcher Enrique Zamora had one of his best outings of the season, his coach said, in a one-hitter that included seven strikeouts and no walks.
"This is the second time he's beat Morton this year, and that's not easy to do," coach Chris Moore said. "They always play against us really hard."
Zamora also pitched against the Governors (9-10, 4-2) in the first round-robin game this season, a 5-4 Clark win.
Morgan, who went 2-for-3 with double and an RBI, was one of four Pioneers to connect for hits against Morton pitcher Aurielio Cazeres. Zamora and Cazares are teammates on the same summer Babe Ruth team.
"We've played against these guys a number of times, and they're all familiar with each other," Moore said. "It's that much harder to win a second time, but it was nice to see us get into good scoring opportunities."
Clark scored its first run in the second inning,when Chris Perez was walked in. Perez then drove in Adam Crnkovic in the third inning on a single.
"We've lost a lot of close games this year," Morton coach Scott Lush said. "We've lost a bunch by one run. We played well, we just were not hitting well and that hurt."
