PORTER TOWNSHIP | When Boone Grove pitcher Dean Hill found out Monday that the sectional championship was being postponed a day, he had one message for his coach: give me the ball.
Hill took the mound Tuesday and took care of Rochester, allowing only three hits in a 7-2 Class 2A sectional championship win for the host Wolves.
"If it was going to be yesterday, I only had three innings to go," Hill said of the postponement. "I wanted to go real bad, so the rain out got me seven. I was pumped to go all day. My fastball was working good, and it had a lot of movement on it."
Hill also had two RBIs for Boone Grove (20-7).
Leadoff hitter Jake Wright set the table for the Wolves, going 1 for 2 with two runs scored.
Boone Grove started the scoring early when Wright led off the game with a single. After a sacrifice moved Wright to third, Hill drove a sacrifice fly ball to right that scored Wright. Cody Poynter started off the Boone Grove second with a double and later came around to score on a Jason Sawa sacrifice fly to left.
"I was just seeing some pretty good pitches up there," Wright said. "I've been struggling a lot towards the beginning of the season, but things clicked for me towards the end."
After he led off the third with a walk, Wright came around to score on a Chuck Kidd double. The next batter, Hill, drove in Kidd for a 4-1 lead. The Wolves added two more in the fourth.
"We jumped on them right away," Hill said. "Jake always gets on base for us, and we had it rolling. Everyone was hitting the ball. Usually, we strike out. That was the key, we put balls in play and made them make plays."
The Wolves face Bishop Noll at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals of the Whiting Regional.
"These guys worked hard at it, and we've liked our chances all along," Boone Grove coach Rollie Thill said of the sectional title win. "Saturday, it's just a matter of who can handle the surrounding, the circumstances, things like that. We'll see where we go."
