First Team

Brett Lilek, Marian Catholic

Sr., UTIL/P/1B

Stats: 7-4, 89 SO, 61 2/3 IP, 27 BB, 39 H, 19 ER, 2.16 ERA; .327 avg., 9 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 24 RBIs, .481 slug. pct.

Scouting report: The Times Player of the Year did not allow an earned run in four postseason appearances. The lefty struck out 36 hitters in three postseason starts. The Arizona State recruit was also a 37th-round pick of the Seattle Mariners. He came back from some midseason soreness in his left arm and led the Spartans to the Class 3A state title. He was also 6-for-8 in the two state final games.

Jesse Lopez, Washington


Stats: 8-3, 123 SO, 17 BB, 3.65 ERA, .420 avg., 21 SB, 6 HR, 47 RBIs

Scouting report: Lopez was all-city and all-Public League Ernie Banks Division as he led the Patriots to the division title. He was the team MVP and threw two no-hitters. His six home runs and 47 RBIs led area sluggers.

Tom Hayes, Mount Carmel


Stats: .434 avg., 46 H, 11 2B, 4 HR, 37 RBIs

Scouting report: Hayes is a pure hitter and the left-handed hitter has extraordinary power. Coach Brian Hurry said he was a presence in the middle of the Caravan's lineup and expects even bigger things from him in 2013.

Dan Lietz, Homewood-Flossmoor


Stats: 9-5, 1 Sv, 134 SO, 73 2/3 IP, 24 BB, 48 H, 16 ER, .338 avg, 10 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 17 RBIs

Scouting report:The lefty was the ace of the Vikings staff and one of the best pitchers in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. Coach Todd Sippel said he is one of the best pitchers to come out of H-F, right with John Ely and Aaron Hauge. Lietz will play at Heartland Community College in Normal.

Colton Lopez, St. Francis de Sales

Stats: 8-7, 152 SO, 90 1/3 IP, 58 BB, 3.56 ERA, .302 avg., 15 RBIs

Scouting report: The most outstanding player in the Catholic League Red, Lopez led the area and state in strikeouts, according to He also played first base for the Pioneers.

Zach Aring, Beecher

Sr., P

Stats: 8-2, 1.63 ERA, 96 SO, 60 IP, .409 avg., 9 RBIs

Scouting report: The River Valley Conference's player of the year, Aring was one of the reasons the Bobcats again won the RVC title. He averaged 1.5 strikeouts per inning.

Braden Mulder, Illiana Christian

Sr., P

Stats: 9-2, 1.43 ERA, 83 SO, 15 ER, 26 BB

Scouting report: The lefty was the ace of the Vikings staff and an all-Metro Suburban Conference pick. He knew how to mix up his pitches and had good control.

T.J. Laurisch, Mount Carmel

Sr., P

Stats: 10-4, 4 Sv, 63 SO, 80 1/3 IP, 19 BB, 69 H, .375 avg., .473 slug. pct., .493 on-base pct., 42 H, 1 HR, 25 RBIs

Scouting report: The Catholic League Blue's Lawless Award winner, Laurisch was the Caravan's mound leader. The Harvard recruit also was 4-for-4 in save opportunities and also was handy with the bat. Laurisch was the school's valedictorian.

John McLaughlin, Crete-Monee

Sr., C

Stats: .468 avg., 58 H, 20 2B, 4 HR, 29 RBIs

Scouting report: McLaughlin was an Illinois Coaches Association East all-star as well as a Southland Athletic Conference pick. A four-year starter, he led the team in batting, hits, doubles and home runs. His 58 hits led the area. McLaughlin was second in RBIs and struck out just nine times. McLaughlin will play at Kankakee Community College.

Sam Kint, Mount Carmel

Sr., 1B

Stats: .377, 46 H, 7 2B, 3 HR, 45 RBIs, .508 slug. pct., .423 on-base pct.

Scouting report: A Catholic League Blue pick, Kint led the team in hits and RBIs. He could drive the ball to all fields and wasn't afraid to sacrifice himself to move the runner over. His height and reach was also good for a few extra outs on close plays or wide throws.

Cameron Bass, Crete-Monee

Jr., 2B

Stats: .349 avg., 37 H, 9 2B, 2 HR, 36 RBIs, 16 SB, .509 slug. pct., .432 on-base pct.

Scouting report: An all-Southland pick, Bass led the team in RBIs and struck out just six times. He was 16-of-17 in stolen base attempts and was very solid defensively.

Ben Kirchler, Homewood-Flossmoor

Sr., SS

Stats: .447, 42 H, 39 R, 14 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 17 RBIs, 16 SB

Scouting report: Anchored the Vikings middle infield. Coach Todd Sippel said he is the best offensive shortstop he ever coached. He will play at Allegheny (Pa.) College. He was caught stealing just twice.

Dylan Kish, Illinois Lutheran

Sr., 3B

Stats: .424, 36 H, 9 2B, 1 HR, 35 RBI, .519 on-base pct.

Scouting report: An all-River Valley Conference selection, he was a big-time run producer for the Chargers.

Rob Cifelli, Marian Catholic

Sr., OF

Stats: .333 avg., 43 H, 6 2B, 1 HR, 11 RBIs, 54 SB.

Scouting report: Cifelli was the catalyst for the Marian offense and stole a school single-season record 54 bases. His lone prep homer came in the Class 3A state semifinals. He committed just two errors all season and will play at John Carroll University.


Kyle Janowski, T.F. South

Sr., OF

Stats: .466 avg., 41 H, 15 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 45 RBIs, 9 SB, .716 slug. pct., .541 on-base pct.

Scouting report: He led the Rebels in hitting, doubles and RBIs. He was an all-South Suburban Blue pick and was the team leader. Janowski was 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.

Zachary Turner, T.F. North


Stats: .425, 51 H, 12 2B, 27 RBIs, 12 SB, 3-2, 20 SO, 3.21 ERA, .963 fldg. pct.

Scouting report: The sophomore played all infield positions, outfield and pitched. He led the area in hits with 51 and also stole 12 bases. He was an all-South Suburban Blue pick and came up with some big hits. Coach Mike Kosiara expects him to be one of the top players in the area the next two years.
