Breakdown
Spartans look to slow it down
The Spartans graduated nearly 80 percent of their offense, so one of their goals is to hold teams in the upper 30s to lower 40s in scoring. To do that, coach Tim Feddeler said it will be imperative to adapt a deliberate style of play. “We want to take 30 to 45 seconds off the clock every possession,” he said. “We want to make teams play defense. We’re going to look for layups. We can’t come down and start taking quick shots, quick threes. We need to be extremely patient and work for the best possible shot.” The Spartans also won’t have one go-to guy, so they’re going to need scoring from a variety of sources. They will count on Juston Grevers, Wade Schuerich and Brandon Propes to share the bulk of the scoring load in the early going. “Most of us are multi-position players,” point guard Chad Schultz said. “I’m more confident of the team this year than in recent years.” The Spartans are high on the potential of Propes, a junior. “He’s one guy I’m looking to have a big year and really step up and be a player,” Feddeler said. !~ Christopher Breach
