HAMMOND | Michael Kirkendall came to Hammond two years ago. The sky was the limit on the transfer from Lew Wallace. Big things were expected.
The 6-foot-5 forward had a few shining moments here and there the last two winters. But Tuesday night at home against Calumet, the snow was melting outside.
Kirkendall hit six mid-range baskets in the third quarter and finished with a team-high 14 points, along with teammate Kortell Caston, as Hammond ran away from the Warriors 76-42.
The Wildcats (9-5) hit 11 3-pointers in the game.
“Our guards did a nice job dribble penetrating and kicking it out,” Hammond coach Larry Moore Jr. said. “We've got some good shooters. But we need out guards to get them the ball in the right spot.
“We did that (Tuesday) night.”
Hammond's defense was also hot and sweaty. On one Calumet possession in the second quarter, the Warriors had to call three timeouts because they could not get the ball over half court in 10 seconds.
“Defense is important,” Kirkendall said. “This was our Senior Night, our last home game. We had to bring everything we have. This was the best offensive run I've had this year.
“I hope to keep it going.”
Levon Hamilton hit three 3s, Juwon Holmes had two, Nate Harris had two and Caston nailed four of them.
Calumet was led by Josh Borst's 12 points. Rashaan Carson scored 11 for the Warriors.
Hammond plays Griffith and Bowman Academy in the next week.
“That's the tough part of our schedule,” Kirkendall said. “We needed this for our confidence. I believe this game will keep us moving in the right direction.”
