LOWELL | Times No. 6 E.C. Central (3-1) used a 27-point third quarter to beat Lowell 68-52 on Saturday night.
Hyron Edwards scored 16 of his 23 points in the third to break open a close game.
E.C. led 50-40 with 8 minutes left. Edwards hit two 3s early in the third quarter to jump-start the Cardinals' outburst. Jalen Blackmon added four points on the inside in the decisive stretch.
Lowell (1-1), playing its home opener in The Pit, had to play catch-up in the fourth quarter and never got closer than 53-45 the rest of the way.
At the game’s outset, Blackmon scored five points in the first quarter to propel the Cardinals to a 13-10 lead at the first stop.
Lowell began to exert itself on the inside as foul trouble began to play a factor in the second quarter. Edwards and Martayveus Carter both sat for extended portions of the second quarter for E.C.
Likewise, Lowell’s Aaron Hamm picked up his third foul with 5:35 left in the second period. Zach VanHook sank two free throws to give Lowell its first lead at 20-19.
VanHook converted 5-of-6 free throws in the second quarter, and the game was tied at 23-23 at the break.
