MORGAN TWP. | Balanced scoring attacks were on display in both Class A sectional semifinals on Friday night.
Kouts had four players score in double-figures in a 62-49 victory over host Morgan Township.
In the other semifinal, Gary 21st Century also had four players record double-figure point totals in a 75-60 win over LaCrosse.
"We knew they would really look to stop Stephen (Keller) and Max (Everaert)," Kouts coach Marty Gaff said. "They're hard guys to stop, but we've also got confidence in our other guys. Cody (Nelson) and Andrew (Birky) both did a good job tonight."
Birky scored all 15 of his team-high points in the second half to lead the Mustangs (18-3). He also grabbed seven rebounds.
Kouts used a 16-4 run in the middle of the third quarter to break a tie game and take a 33-21 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter. Morgan Township did not get any closer than 10 points the rest of the game.
Birky hit two 3-pointers during the run, and Keller closed it out with a layup in transition.
The Mustangs shot 16-of-24 from the field in the second half and outscored the Cherokees (5-17) 45-34 in the second half.
Keller had 14 points for the Mustangs, while Everaert added 13. Nelson contributed 12 points off of the bench.
"He sparked us tremendously off the bench," Gaff said of Nelson.
Brandon Murphy and Ryan Klikus each scored 18 points for the Cherokees. The duo combined for all 23 of Morgan Township's points in the fourth quarter.
In the late game, Lewis Brown led Gary 21st Century (10-10) with 18 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Mykel Mayes added 13 points for the Cougars, while Ahkee Porter had 11 points and nine rebounds. Myrin Kirksey added 10 points for Gary 21st Century, which scored 45 points in the second half.
"We look for that every night, and tonight it just worked out," Gary 21st Century coach Rodney Williams said of the scoring balance. "I'm real happy about that."
Jimmy Rippe paced the Tigers (2-18) with 17 points. Riley Charlesworth added 12, and Joey Matta had 11. LaCrosse shot 11-of-26 from behind the arc, but committed 24 turnovers.
