PORTER TWP. | In a game of runs, Crown Point made the final one.
The Bulldogs held Boone Grove to one field goal in the fourth quarter and closed the game on a 20-5 run to get a 55-42 win in boys basketball action on Saturday.
“We did a good job stringing together some consecutive stops,” Crown Point coach Clint Swan said.
Bret Barclay, who had a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds, scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for Crown Point (5-10), which snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
Barclay hit back-to-back baskets during the run, tipping in a missed shot by Nick Jeffirs and then scoring in transition after a steal by Alex Nickla.
“He was very active, whenever he saw drives he was following toward the basket,” Swan said of Barclay. “He wasn’t standing still.”
Tom Bardeson, who had 17 points for the Bulldogs, added six points in the fourth quarter.
The Wolves (8-6) were 1-of-9 from the field in the fourth quarter with five turnovers.
The two teams traded runs throughout the first half. Crown Point opened the game on a 13-3 spurt, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Bardeson and one from Nickla.
Boone Grove responded with a 9-0 run, with five points from Dean Hill and four from Daniel Malouhos.
Barclay scored the next seven points for the Bulldogs to lead lead 20-12 after the first quarter. He ended the quarter on a put back just before the horn sounded.
The Wolves closed the second quarter on a 14-4 run, getting two baskets from Malouhos.
Hill led Boone Grove with 10 points.
