Girls
Boone Grove (17-6): The Wolves captured their fourth sectional crown with wins over Winamac, 46-43, and Rochester, 38-36, last week at Hebron. Six of Boone's last seven games have been decided by five points or less, and the Wolves have won five of them. Boone has won at least 17 games in nine of the last 12 seasons under coach Candy Wilson. The Wolves will face Whiting in the Class 2A Rochester Regional on Saturday.
Hanover Central (14-8): The Wildcats recorded sectional wins over Andrean, 63-54, and Knox, 48-40, before falling to Rensselaer, 43-40, in the championship game of their own 3A sectional. Hanover all-time leading scorer Blayr Poston totaled 70 points in the three games to finish her career with 1,345 points.
LaCrosse (8-14): The Tigers’ 51-30 win over Gary Lighthouse was their first sectional game win since 1996. They followed that effort with a 54-34 win over Covenant Christian before falling to Morgan Township 46-37 in the championship game of the Class A Morgan Sectional. LaCrosse had won just six sectional games in 37 years prior to this season.
Morgan Township (14-10): The Cherokees defended their sectional crown with wins over Kouts, 52-42, Washington Township, 47-42, and LaCrosse, 46-37. It was Morgan's fifth sectional title. Junior Trina Coleman totaled 60 points in the three games and moved past 1999 grad Megan Hefner into eighth place on the Morgan scoring list. Junior Hannah Murphy recorded a career-high 14 points against the Senators. Junior Brianna Leuck totaled 23 points in the three games to reach the 300 mark for her career. Morgan will face No. 2-ranked Oregon-Davis in the Class A Caston Regional on Saturday.
Portage (13-10): Senior Nicki Monahan scored 22 points in a 54-44 Class 4A Portage Sectional loss to Merrillville, marking the ninth time this year that she has scored at least 20 points in a game.
South Central (12-8): The Satellites dropped a 41-39 overtime decision to Culver Community at the Class A Oregon-Davis Sectional despite a season-high 23 points from junior Jill Rosenbaum.
Washington Township (9-13): Sophomore guard Heather Burton scored a personal-best 31 points in the Senators’ 79-21 rout of Gary 21st Century in the Class A Morgan Township Sectional. Junior Natalee Kwiatkowski matched her season high with 10 points in a sectional semifinal loss to Morgan.
Wheeler (9-13): Wheeler won its opening-round Class 2A River Forest Sectional game 47-29 over the Ingots but lost to eventual champion Whiting 47-33 in the semifinals. Junior Nickole Finch totaled 31 points in the two games to move over the 900 mark for her career to 927. In the process, she moved past 1988 grad Neilly Carpenter into third place on the all-time Wheeler scoring list.
Boys
Boone Grove (10-7): Senior Dean Hill scored a season-high 21 points in a 61-53 loss to Lowell.
Chesterton (9-8): The Trojans lost to Merrillville 64-56, running their losing steak to 11 straight against the Pirates.
Hanover Central (12-6): The Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games with a 62-38 victory over North Newton. Senior Max Johnson tallied 15 points to move past 1972 grad Chuck Jackson into 11th place on the Wildcats scoring list.
Kouts (16-2): The Mustangs defeated Morgan 70-41 for their ninth win in the last 10 games. It was also Kouts' seventh consecutive win over the Cherokees. Junior Max Everaert led the way with 25 points and went over the 600 mark for his career to 620. The Mustangs will host Hanover Central on Friday in what will determine the Porter County Conference round-robin title. A Hanover victory would give the Wildcats the outright crown, and a Kouts win would clinch at least a share of the title. The Wildcats dealt the Mustangs one of their two losses this year in the championship game of the PCC tourney, 64-60.
LaCrosse (3-12): Senior Matt Bennett recorded a season-high 12 points in the Tigers’ 47-45 win over West Central. The win ended a nine-game losing streak to the Trojans in the series.
Portage (10-10): Junior Luke Kizer scored a career-high 21 points in a 61-53 loss to Michigan City. Kizer also went over the 300 mark to 316. Sophomore Jordan Collazo added 12 points and reached the 300-point plateau. Coach Rick Snodgrass is just two wins shy of 300 for his career.
South Central (2-13): A 68-43 loss to Washington Township extended the Satellites' losing streak to eight games. Senior Adam Clindaniel led the way with 15 points and moved over the 400 mark to 409.
Valparaiso (15-3): The Vikings avenged one of their three losses this year with a 55-46 win over Lake Central. It was their eighth win in the last nine games and improved their Duneland Athletic Conference record to 10-2, which is second in the conference behind Merrillville’s 12-0 mark.
Washington Township (11-6): Junior Brandon Adkins matched his personal best with 23 points in a 25-point win over South Central.
Westville (7-9): The Blackhawks posted wins over River Forest, 69-54, and Culver Community, 59-52, giving them a three-game winning streak. Junior Shawn Gerron struck for a career-best 26 points against the Ingots. Junior Collin Walker totaled 23 points in the two games to move over the 200 mark to 213. Senior Dylan Perney tossed in 10 points against Culver to reach the 200 mark.
Wheeler (10-7): Senior Jeremy Truchan went over the 300 mark in the Bearcats’ 54-50 win over Morton.
