Griffith Schools Director of Finance and Operations George Jerome issued a press release stating that the dissolving of sports contracts between Griffith and Hammond will be temporary.

The two boys basketball teams were scheduled to play on Tuesday this week, but the game was canceled following a fight at a Freshman C game in December.

The two schools then canceled all contracts for all sports, a move that was supported by the IHSAA. In a statement sent to the two districts, IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox agreed that ending the schools' contracts was "an appropriate response."

"Additionally, the IHSAA encourages both valued member schools to redouble their efforts in sportsmanship and appropriate representations of their school communities," Cox said in the release. "Finally, the IHSAA accepts these actions as appropriate responses and considers this most recent occurrence closed."

Griffith and Hammond varsity boys basketball teams engaged in a benches-clearing brawl in Feb. 2015 that led to both teams being removed from the postseason tournament. A court order allowed the Panthers and Wildcats to play, with Griffith reaching the Class 3A state final in 2015.
