Last year: 5-16, 3-11 (DAC)
The Slicers feature a senior-laden roster with six seniors of the 12. “That core group gives you maturity and an older, smarter group,” coach Tom Wells said. LaPorte returns two starters from last year’s team. Senior point guard Josh Fleming led the Slicers with 15.0 points per game and was an All-DAC selection. Senior center Gage Ott also averaged 15.0 points per contest and led the Slicers in rebounding with 6.0 rebounds per game. Wells said Fleming and Ott give the Slicers a good nucleus to build around. “I don’t know if you could design it any better,” Wells said. “Having a three-year starter at point guard makes you feel really good, and to have a 6-6 kid that can anchor down low, that’s two of the most important pieces to have.” Blake Arnett and Logan Dubbs join Fleming in the backcourt, and Jacob Jones, Miles Browder, Tyler Littlejohn, Brian McGuire and Matt Walls will provide depth in the frontcourt. Sophomore center Matt Otwinowski, a middle linebacker on the football team, is willing to do all the little things, and Wells appreciates that. “If you take two or three good players and surround them with kids who will do the little things and not worry about stats, you’ll be alright,” he said. — Andrew Stem
