Last season: 3-17, 1-6 (PCC)
While still facing an uphill battle, first-year head coach Eric Branz has the advantage of not being new to the South Central program, having coached the junior varsity in the past. Stepping into the varsity role, Branz hopes to see his team play a crisp brand of basketball. “I’m really looking for us to improve our execution, the style that we’re going to play,” Branz said. “It’s going to be a little bit different than what they’re used to.” The Satellites have one senior in their probable starting lineup — and three sophomores — so early bumps and bruises are to be expected as the team learns and grows together. Branz is looking forward to expanded practice time during winter break and expects to see improvement from his team starting the new year, then hopes to be at full potential for the Porter County Conference tournament and the sectional. — Michael Raines
Last season finish
Lost in the Class A Culver Community Sectional opener to Westville.
Leading returning scorer
Mark Richards, 6.7 ppg.
Leading returning rebounder
Johnny Rosenbaum, 4.3 rpg.
Mark Richards, Jr., G/F: Just a junior, Richards is ready to take a big step forward. A contributor on last year’s team, his improved shooting and ball-handling will make him a leader this season.
Newcomers to watch
David Williams, So., G and Max Clemons, So., G: Williams is a prototypical gym rat, spending extra time on the court since workouts started in April. Clemons, like Richards, worked hard to improve his shooting and ball-handling over the summer.
